On the Nintendo Switch™ version, two players can compete locally by using the Free Match options.
The second player can choose one of the monsters that the main user has trained or any downloaded monster.

Local match guide

Select Vs. Mode on the Title Screen.

Select the saved data containing the monsters you want to use in the match.

Select Free Match.

Select the monster 1P will use.

Set a condition on the Monster Search screen and select the monster 2P will use.

On the Control options screen, choose 1P manual VS 2P manual and start the battle.

Joy-Con Controls

When using the Joy-Con (shared play) for a local match, refer to the following controls.

Move the monster

[Up and Down] Toggle technique
[Left and Right] Move the technique cursor

View the battle controls info

Give up on the battle and forfeit (counts as a loss).

Push the opponent away to gain distance.

Use a technique

Open the menu; turn the sound ON/OFF; view this manual, etc.
For Sound, you can choose between the original version or the re-mastered version.
